Yesterday I saw the man that I will eventually marry. He was standing off to the side of the highway by himself, holding a baseball cap and looking at something on the ground. All I could see of him was his back and his head, and his arm when he lifted it up to replace his hat and cup his hand around the nape of his neck like something profound was happening there on the ground.
-
His t-shirt was the kind of thing that my boss would charitably refer to as older than Moses. He did look kind of like what I imagine Moses would look like, when I think about it, sans the beard and the dress. He stood in the desert, like he was not even aware of the civilization whizzing by on the highway behind him.
-
I passed by him in a blur and only have a couple of freeze frames of him in my head- his back, his raised arm- but I like the way he considered whatever it was on the ground. Somehow this seemed tied up in the way a man is supposed to be, comfortable standing out there alone, in the heat, while high school kids honked, while girls like me watched.
